An interesting, well written account of archaeological discoveris in Egypt and surrounding areas in the ninetenth century. Light rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, gift inscription on front end paper has offset to following blank leaf, tissue guard unevenly browned, pages lightly browned, otherwise a tight, bright VG + copy.

Hardcover. 8vo cloth, xiv + 248pp, Original blue cloth, with gilt titling to spine and upper board, frontis & 27 plates, four maps (one folding), list of literature, index. A detailed account of the oasis at Kharga. Corners bumped, cloth a little rubbed at edges with a tiny bit of fraying at upper spine, cloth a bit darkened and gilt-titling on spine dulled. A charmingly illustrated and produced inter-war history and armchair guide to Luxor, site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, home to the temple complex of Karnak and Luxor, and across the Nile from the famed Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Text vol. bound in original half green morocco with black pebbled cloth boards, raised bands, top edge gilt, b&w in-text illustrations throughout, bibliography. Plate vol. in original half black leather with black pebbled cloth boards. The first edition of the Facsimile Plate volume was published as a stand-alone work in 1890 but the demand for a text version to accompany it resulted in the production of these two volumes, with the 1894 Plate volume produced to accompany the 1895 First Edition of the Text volume. The plate volume, reproduces in magnificent fold out facsimiles, "The Papyrus of Ani," which is perhaps the most superbly illustrated of the surviving copies of the "Book of the Dead". "The Papyrus of Ani," is said to have been found at Thebes and is thought to date from the XVIIIth Dynasty, about 1400BC. It was purchased for the British Museum in 1888 by Wallis Budge. The original is in scroll form - about 76 feet in length. It is here reproduced in 37 segments, each on a double-page spread of approx. 20 x 48 inches. The text volume is a thick heavy quarto, and comprises a lengthy Introduction detailing the history and context of the Book of the Dead and the Papyrus of Ani, a table of chapters, and a typeset version of the hieroglyphic text, with interlinear transliteration and complete English translation. Boards chafed with light spotting to cloth and rubbing to all edges. Spines and corners rubbed and chafed with some loss of leather. Front hinge of text vol. cracked but holding well, very light scattered foxing. Diagonal crease to board of Plate vol., pages thumbed. Overall a sound and unmarked VG set. Quite scarce.

The complete Syriac text, with English translation, of 'The Book of Governors,' - better known as 'The Historia Monastica of Thomas of Marga.' Thomas was a ninth century monk at the renowned Nestorian monastery of Beth 'Abhe, east of Mosul, who was later appointed a Bishop of the Nestorian Church. During his bishopric he composed The Book of Governors, a history of his own monastery, which also includes biographies of other Mesopotamian religious figures. Budge observed that the work"occupies an unique position in Syriac literature, and it fully deserves the veneration with which it has been and is still regarded by all classes of Nestorians to whom it is known." Boards lightly rubbed at edges corners and spine ends lightly bruised, spines very slightly darkened, previous owner's initials on front endpapers, most pages in volume 1 uncut. Overall a sound and unmarked better than VG set. No dust jackets.
