Large 8vo. xiv, fold-out map, 318pp. Original maroon cloth with gilt titling to front cover, gilt to spine, top edge gilt, edges uncut, frontis w/ tissue guard, b&w illustrations and photos, notes and index. Jeremiah Curtin (1835 – 1906) a Harvard educated American translator and folklorist, who worked for the Smithsonian, and was said to know seventy languages. He was perhaps best known for his English translations of Henryk Sienkiewicz's historical novel With Fire and Sword in 1888 and Quo Vadis in 1897. This volume is the result of his travels in Siberia where he studied the religion, myths and folklore. Lower corners and spine bumped, upper spine chafed with some loss of cloth and fraying, pages lightly and unevenly browned, some very light foxing, many pages unopened. Overall a tight, unmarked VG copy. Scarce in this edition.
