Item #63668 The Foundations of Culture in Australia: An Essay towards National Self Respect. P. R. STEPHENSEN, Craig Munro.

The Foundations of Culture in Australia: An Essay towards National Self Respect.

Sydney: Allen & Unwin, 1986. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Octavo. xxviii + 192pp. Black textured papered boards gilt-lettered on spine. A facsimile offset reprint of Stephensen's original 1936 "strident polemic" on Australian culture and identity. Several b/w illustrations after the introduction by Munro, the biographer of P. R. Stephensen. Stephensen was of course for a time the publisher, friend, and apologist for Aleister Crowley, and although there is nothing overtly Crowleyan in this tract, something of the Beast's bombast and assuredness seems to have slipped in. Top-edge slightly foxed, several minor scuffs to bottom extremities, pages lightly toned with a bit of scattered browning - else a clean VG+ copy in VG+ dust jacket. (Dust jacket lightly rubbed overall, not clipped, now in removable protective mylar cover). Item #63668
