Leipzig: Gerstenberg Verlag Hildesheim, 1978. Reprint. Hardcover. Small thick quarto, x + 1454 pp. Original brown faux leather with gilt lettering to upper board and spine, b&w photographic frontispiece of a statue of Boehme. A facsimile reprint of the 1923 first edition with errata bound in. The author, Herman Vetterling (1849-1931), was born in Sweden but moved to the USA in 1871- where he abandoned his native Lutheranism and embraced the teachings of Swedenborg, whilst also exploring Buddhism and Theosophy. However, he found increasing interest in the works of thee Protestant mystic Jacob Boehme, with whom he came to feel an almost personal affinity, and devoted over a quarter of a century to the careful investigation of his teachings. It was from these studies that the present volume, a massive study of all aspects of Boehme's theosophical system was born. The 1923 edition, which this copy reproduces - is commonly cited as a "First Edition" - but in fact it is the "First Trade Edition" as it was preceded by a leather-bound edition of fifty numbered copies in 1922. The faintest of shelf wear, light bruising to spine ends, small bump to fore-edge of both boards, top edge a little darkened, pages lightly toned - but fresh and unmarked. Otherwise, a tight and unmarked VG+ / near Fine copy (Issued without dust jacket). Large heavy book, additional shipping will be required. Item #64237
