Original light blue cloth with gilt title and author to spine, blind stamped Virgin Mary and child on upper board, b&w frontispiece, b&w plates, index. E. A. Wallis Budge was Keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities in the British Museum and a great scholar and author on ancient custom and belief. In this volume Budge translates "all of the important Ethiopic Legends of the 'Blessed Virgin Mary' - translated from the Ethiopic manuscripts collected by King Theodore at Makdala. A previous owner has made notes on the upper edge of the front pastedown and has also affixed a hand "pocket" on the lower half- with number of related items including, several photo representations of Mary etc, all front different sources. Corners and spine ends lightly bruised, spine somewhat faded, top edge darkened and some light toning to pages, a single line of owner's notation on the rear pastedown. Overall a tight, internally clean VG copy (no dust jacket). An uncommon early edition. Item #65221
