Gilt decorated purple cloth with gilt titling to spine and upper board, printed endpapers, duo-tone plates, bibliography. The First English language edition, (c. 1934) of one of the first major studies of western sexual occultism. The text appears to have been largely drawn from the work first published in French as 'L'occultisme et l'amour' in 1902, and in German as 'Okkultismus und Liebe' in 1903. Chapters include "Sex in the World of Magic", "Satanism and Demon Worship - Erotico-Mystic Perversions' "Incubi and Succubi", "The Witches' Sabbath", "The Black Mass and Its Orgies", "Werewolves and Vampires" "Sex Enchantments" "Magic Drinks-Magic Invocations, Magic Aphrodisiacs", "Sex Talismans and Amulets" "Sex Languages and Symbols" "Dreams and Sexual Magic" etc. etc. A well used slightly DEFECTIVE copy. The cloth has been darkened by the application of varnish (this was sometimes done in the late 1880s and early 1900s as a way of protecting the cloth) and it is now darkened and crazed with scratching and marks, boards rubbed, all edges and extremities are somewhat chafed and worn, endpapers cracked at hinges but boards firmly attached, pages a bit toned. This volume does not have the three leaves of advertisements bound in at the front of some copies, and one leaf: pp. xi/xii has been excised - all this has was the limitation details on the recto and a blank verso (a xerox of the missing page is tipped in). Otherwise internally bright and unmarked. Overall a clean Good copy. (no dust jacket issued). Item #65324
