The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night (4 Volume Set); Rendered into English from the literal and complete French translation

New York, NY: St. Martin's Press, 1972. First US Edition. Hardcovers. Large octavos. Four volumes: xii + 644 pp & vi + 592 pp. & vi + 570 pp. & viii + 538 pp. Blue cloth with gilt titling to spines. An English translation by Edward Powys Mathers of the French translation from the Arabic by Joseph Charles Mardrus (Jean-Charles Mardrus: 1868–1949). Mardrus was an Egyptian-born French orientalist, poet and translator. Some scholars have criticised Mardrus' translation as too literary, suggesting that he reworked the stories, sometimes adding extra material, and giving them a polish that the originals lacked. In particular it has been suggested that he added to the homosexual elements of the work. Mardrus denied these allegations, indicating that his translation was based on variant texts, and saying that he was working on a volume that would serve as a sort of scholarly appendix, identifying sources etc. although this remained unpublished and presumably unfinished at the time of his death. Cloth a little faded; bottom page edges very lightly foxed; light bumping to corners and light rubbing to edges, otherwise, a tight and bright VG set in VG dust jackets. (Dust jackets a little rubbed with small tears and creases along edges and very light foxing, not price clipped. Now protected by removable mylar sleeves). Item #10248
