A Scientific Report on "The Search for Bridey Murphy"

New York, NY: The Julian Press, 1956. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xxxii + 224pp. Maroon boards lettered in orange on spine, bibliography, appendices. In this volume a group of essays by serious scientists, aimed at providing members of the public with sufficient specialist knowledge to draw their own conclusions about the famous "Bridey Murphy" case. Bridey Murphy, was purported to have been a 19th-century Irishwoman who U.S. housewife Virginia Tighe (1923 – 1995) claimed to have been in a past life. Now the case has generally been concluded to be the result of cryptomnesia [the return of long forgotten/childhood memories]. The essays are: Medical hypnosis by Bernard B. Raginsky, Problems of reincarnation by F.L. Marcuse; Understanding the Relationship between the Hypnotist and His subject by Margaretta K. Bowers; Hypnosis, miraculous healing, and ostensibly supernatural phenomena by Arthur Shapiro; and The meaning of hypnotic behavior by Milton V. Kline. Very light bruising & rubbing to spine ends and corners, page edges a bit darkened, minimal pencil lines to no more than 20 pages, otherwise a tight bright better than VG copy in Good + dust jacket (dust jacket price-clipped, rubbed, chipped & torn at top of spine, tear & small hole mid-spine. Now in protective mylar cover). Item #13227
