Jephthah; and Other Mysteries Lyrical and Dramatic.

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner and Co., 1899. First Edition - First Issue. Hardcover. Large Octavo., (xxii) + 224pp (+8pp. publisher's advertisements bound in at rear). Cream cloth spine with brick-red paper covered boards, paper spine label. The first issue of the first edition, with the Kegan Paul advertisements, rather than the later SPRT catalogue at the rear. The work comprises Crowley's verse-play, "Jephthah," along with the collection of plays-in-verse and poetry which combine as the 'Mysteries, Lyrical and Dramatic.' According to Crowley's first bibliographer, L. C. R. Duncombe-Jewell, 1,000 copies were printed thus, on machine-made paper (with a little less than a dozen in various special issues), but D'Arch Smith tells that Kegan Paul's records reveal that only 200 were printed. Of these a staggering 82 copies were sent out as "review copies" but despite this largesse only ten copies were sold during the book's first four years on the market. Bound in at the rear is an eight page advertisement comprising reviews of Crowley's "Songs of the Spirit" and "The Tale of Archais", both of which were published in 1898. Oddly, "Jephthah; and Other Mysteries" is a book seldom seen in Very Good condition. Copies encountered are routinely extremely shabby, to the extent that some have jokingly posited that this could not be the consequence of simple coincidence, and that someone must have intentionally embarked on a very effective campaign to locate and vandalise all copies of the work! This copy is a little better than average, and would rate at near-VG. The edges are rubbed in spots, boards lightly discolored and with a couple of small chips to the paper covering, corners rounded, spine darkened. There is an attractive and contemporary (1899) previous owner's signature on the ffep: suggesting that this was one of the ten that actually sold as the review copies were typically marked! The pages are uniformly browned, otherwise the internals are clean, tight and unmarked, and the paper label on spine 95% intact (no dust jacket issued). Item #14014
