Footfalls on the Boundary of Another World with Narrative Illustrations.

Philadelphia, PA: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1860. First American edition. Hardcover. Small Thick Octavo. 528pp. Blind stamped brown cloth w/ gilt titling to spine. 2 plates. Appendix and index. Year 1860 on title-page, copyright date 1859 on verso of title-page. A work by Robert Dale Owen (1801-1875), an American who served in both the Indiana legislature and Congress. Owen went on to become Charge d'Affaires in Naples, where he met the medium D. D. Home, who fired his interest in Spiritualism. During his subsequent researches Owen became convinced that "what by many have been regarded as new and unexampled phenomena are but modern phases of what has ever existed." In 'Footfalls on the Boundary of Another World,' he sought to set out, in methodical fashion, historical and well attested examples of psychic phenomena, with a particular emphasis on "spontaneous phenomena, rather than to those that are evoked," as he felt that the chance of being "misled by expectant attention" was greatly reduced. Cloth a bit rubbed overall, spine ends and corners bumped and chafed with some light fraying, spine ends chipped. Spine slightly cocked and faded. Previous owner's name and bookshop sticker on front endpaper, page edges and endpapers a bit darkened with some foxing. A few spots of browning here and there in text, several signatures slightly loose but holding, a few pencil marks. Overall, a sound Good + copy. Item #20632
