London: Henry Hughs / John White, 1798-1800. First edition. Hardcovers, Four volumes in two (All published). Thick Folio, (12 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches) Vol. I, [4], xvi, 264, [x]; Vol. II, [12], 374, [xiv] pp.; Vol. III, [xvi], 284, [xiv] pp. Vol. IV, [viii], 318 [actually 320], [xxii] pp. (As always there is an error of pagination in Volume IV, with the numbers 281 & 282 used twice - thus the page tally is actually 320 rather than the 318 it appears to be). Superb modern quarter-leather binding in early nineteenth century style: leather spine with raised bands and gilt stamped leather title labels on spines, marbled paper boards. Three folding maps, two engraved frontispieces, nineteen engraved plates, and two engraved vignettes. The author intended to publish Outlines of the Globe as a fourteen volume set, but died after only two volumes had been published. His son saw the third and fourth volumes through the press, but they were issued without the plates that appeared in the first two volumes. The set is ex-library, but the only markings are a single oval-shaped stamp on the half-title pages of Vols. I & III, and 2 & 3 oval-shaped stamps respectively on the title pages of the same volumes (Vols. II & IV are thus altogether unmarked). The pages are largely un-opened, and the edges untrimmed. A little light foxing, and a hint of browning to the pages, some of which are lightly darkened by the adjacent plates. A very clean, complete, VG + set, of this important work on South & South East Asia, Australasia, and the Pacific. Item #25869
