Item #38679 An original autograph letter, signed, on the letterhead of the occult journal Lucifer. 1892. Annie BESANT.

An original autograph letter, signed, on the letterhead of the occult journal Lucifer. 1892.

NP. Written on a single sheet of 5" x 8" printed letterhead. A short holograph note, dated Nov. 23, 1892. It reads "Dear Sir. I cannot make any further engagements until after my return from America, for which I sail tomorrow. The Sunderland Students should surely have known their own rules. As it is, they make an engagement months ahead, and after leaving it settled for many weeks so that I made other engagements dependent on it, they cooly throw me over. If your clients treat you in this way, you can hardly wonder if one hestitates to make a fresh engagement in a town in which the same people may serve on two bodies. Sincerely. Annie Besant." The exact circumstances of what happened are not known, but clearly the "Sunderland Students Assoc." (the precursor to the present "Sunderland Students Union") had cancelled at short notice a long-standing engagement they had made for Besant to speak, causing her great inconvenience and offence. The journey to America that she mentioned was her second trip there, during which she undertook an extensive lecture tour of the United States, ending in New York and Boston. A number of creases from having been folded, overall VG condition. Item #38679
