The History of Scotland During the Reigns of Queen Mary and of King James VI. Till his Accesion to the Crown of England With a Review of Scottish History Previous to That Period; and an Appendix Containing Original Papers. (2 Volumes).

London: A. Millar, 1762. Fifth Edition. Hardcovers, Two volume set, Quartos. Vol1 : viii + 437pp. Vol 2 : 260pp + 118pp (Appendix) + 39pp (dissertation on K. Henry's Murder etc) + 30pp (index). Contemporary full leather with raised bands, gilt tooling and marbled endpapers. Robertson's history was rapidly acknowledged as the best and most eloquent account of Scottish history during the reigns of Mary and James VI and quickly proved extremely popular, going through no less than five editions in the three years following its first publication (1759). Piece torn from first blank of Volume I, title pages evenly toned, occasional foxing, throughout. Bindings rubbed and worn, with chipping to the leather at head and tail of spine and rounding to the points. Hinges of Vol 1, firm, but front hinge of Vol. II cracked, although the board still seems to be reasonably firmly attached. The gatherings are firm, and save for a few pencil annotations the pages are clean, tight and bright. Would make a worthwhile working set, or worthy of a rebind. Priced low on account of the condition of the binding, which would rate as G only. Item #40487
