Item #40738 A Book of Satyrs. Austin Osman SPARE, James Guthrie.
A Book of Satyrs.

A Book of Satyrs.

London & New York: John Lane / The Bodley Head, (1909). Second Edition. Hardcover. Folio. 17.5 x 13.25 inches. (32pp.) Green paper covered boards with title and decorative device on front cover, parchment spine. Text printed on thick laid paper. Edition Limited to 300 copies Decorative title page plus reproductions of thirteen full-page black and white line drawings, as well as a number of smaller decorations. Introduction by James Guthrie. The Second Edition of Spare's second-published book - this edition had an additional full page plate "Pleasure" (used as the frontispiece) that did not appear in the 1907 First Edition, and the text of Guthrie's Introduction has also been reset and some of the vignettes re-arranged. Harper A2b. Small tear to the bottom of the spine at the front hinge. Spine and boards somewhat grubby, as always, and with a rather unfortunate liquid stain, somewhat larger than a matchbox, near the fore-edge of the front board. Corners lightly bumped and rounded as always. Internally the book is far nicer than usually encountered: this is a book that often suffers from quite severe shadowing and offset from the plates. In this case there is only a hint of discoloration, and a little light foxing to the edges. Small contemporary bookseller's blindstamp on first blank. Internally quite bright but the state of the binding means it would not really rate above VG. Item #40738
