Original publisher's brown cloth decorated in blind on spine & boards, gilt-lettered on spine. Frontispiece. portrait. Two fold-out b/w maps & one fold out chart. B/w full-page & text illustrations. The extraordinary account of the second African expedition missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) who starting in Cape Town in 1853, marched some 4000 miles through Africa, eventually ending his travels in present-day Mozambique in 1856. One of his chief motivations was to end the African slave-trade, through christian education and by opening the regions to outside economic interests, but he was an explorer in all senses, mapping, making anthropological and historical observations, and recording the natural history of the areas through which he passed. Light wear to spine & boards, cloth somewhat chipped at spine ends and starting to split in places at front hinge, front endpapers discolored especially front free endpaper which has a large gray mark. Slight tide-marks affecting edges of frontis and top-edges of some pages & fold-out maps toward rear, 1" x 3" top-corner piece clipped from second front blank page, pages 205-208, 269/270 &717-720 untidily opened with slight fore-edge loss, otherwise a solid, complete VG copy (no dust jacket).
