Octavo. xiv + 478pp. Original brown cloth gilt-lettered on spine, decorations in black on spine, title & illustrations in black on upper board. B/w frontisportrait. B/w plates & illustrations. Told by their older sister , An account of the "Fox sisters", Margaret and Kate, whose alleged mediumistic activities marked the beginning of the nineteenth century Spiritualist movement, by their older sister Leah [Fox] Underhill. Offset from old related newsclipping on two pages (clipping now in an archival sleeve at front of book). Cloth a bit rubbed overall with a few light marks, cloth of spine and corners chafed and lightly bruised, page-edges darkened, plates and first and last leaves foxed, pages toned, contemporary owner's name on front pastedown & 3rd leaf, top 1" (blank) neatly excised from dedication page (pp. iii/iv), title-page splitting at lower inner margin but almost invisibly reinforced on verso with archival tissue paper repair. Else a tight unmarked about VG copy (no dust jacket). Quite scarce. Item #44195
