Boston, MA: T. H. Carter, 1825. Second US Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. 396pp. Rare original binding, thin linen spine with paper title-label over plain boards. Fore- & bottom-edges untrimmed. The second US edition (the first was Baltimore, 1812), or first US edition thus: unlike the previous Baltimore edition the text of of this Boston edition was taken from the new English translation by the Rev. J. Clowes, which was first published in London in 1817. (Hyde 1015) The author, Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772) was a Swedish scientist, philosopher, theologian, and mystic. He termed himself a Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ in his "True Christian Religion", and he authored a number of other works but he is best known for this book on the afterlife which was first published in London 1758. Boards rubbed with minor darkening and discolouration, hinges cracked but boards still firmly attached, small damp mark at extreme upper edge of rear board, corners rounded. Spine quite chipped - mainly at edges and ends. Pages browned with moderate pale foxing unmarked. Clearly much used, but still overall a complete Good + copy of this scarce early American edition.
