London: The Annals of Psychical Science, 1909. First edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. 52pp. Printed paper boards. B/w vignettes. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Carrington on the second front blank page to fellow psychical researcher Helen C. Lambert. The book is a short study of the best known phenomena presented by the fakirs and yogis of India, and the methods by which they are achieved. Carrington suggests that these supposedly supernatural phenomena are almost always achieved by mundane means, but does not rule out the possibility that there are others with genuine supernatural and psychical powers on the sub-continent. The recipient of the book, Helen C. Lambert, was for a time the secretary of Titus Bull, director of the James H. Hyslop Foundation for the Treatment of Cases of Obsession by Psychic Methods. She discussed her work treating individuals whose mental illness might have been caused by spirit obsession, in the book "A General Survey of Psychical Phenomena" and wrote several other works including "Cure Through Suggestion ... Practical Hints Obtained Through the Mediumship of Mrs. Eileen Garrett" and the essay "Elements of Psychical Phenomena." Neatly rebacked with white tissue-paper. Small ink spot to rear board, boards rubbed, front free endpaper missing, inner gutter split at title-page (binding holding). Still a solid, attractive copy, with a nice provenance. (no dust jacket issued). Item #44584
