Yorkshire Writers - Richard Rolle of Hampole: An English Father of the Church and his Followers ( Two volumes ).

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., 1895. First Edition. Hardcovers. Large octavos. Two volumes. Vol. 1: xiv + 444pp.; Vol. 2: xliv + 458pp. Green cloth lettered in black on spines. A scholarly collection of the works of the fourteenth century English mystic, religious writer and hermit Richard Rolle (Richard Rolle of Hampole). An extensive collection, it includes not only works conclusively known to be his, but also those whose authenticity is in question, and a number that were almost certainly incorrectly attributed to him. A clean ex-library set with usual marks: paper labels with call nos. to spines, bookplates on front pastedowns, penciled call nos. on front free endpapers. Cloth lightly rubbed and darkened, corners and spine ends chafed with several tiny tears at upper spines, contemporary previous owner's inscription on the front free endpaper of Vol.1, a very few scattered pencil marks. Sections of an article clipped from the Yorkshire Observer (1914) on 'The Hermit Life of Richard Rolle' glued to rear endpapers of Vol.1; these clippings are now age-browned but text remains legible.) Overall a solid near VG set (no dust jackets called for). Item #44957
