The Shadow of the Raggedstone.

London: Elkin Mathews, 1909. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. 8vo. vi + 564pp. Original black stamped grey cloth with decorative design on front cover by Austin Osman Spare. A dark novel by Charles F. Grindrod whose central character is an unfortunate monk who is trapped into a life of mayhem and murder, and who curses all who approach the hill that ultimately becomes the chief source of his torment, thereby by tying in with an old Worcestershire legend that grave misfortune will befall anyone who walks in the shadow of the Ragged Stone Hill. The book was first published in 1887, but this second edition is the one that is sought after on account of the cover design by Austin Osman Spare (which was not present in the first edition). Cloth a little rubbed, quite heavily at the bottom corner of the front board, affecting the lower part of the illustration. Previous owner's signature on front free endpaper, and small blindstamp on half-title page. Some scattered foxing, heaviest in the first and last half-dozen leaves, and on the page edges. Otherwise a VG copy of a difficult-to-find work. Item #46035
