Kookaburras and Satyrs. Some Recollections of the Fanfrolico Press.

Cremorne, Australia: Talkarra Press, 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 36pp. Bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering to upper board and spine, printed endpapers. Edition limited to 225 numbered copies. This copy is un-numbered but has been inscribed & signed by the printer, Walter Stone, in the colophon. Stephensen was of course for a time the publisher, friend, and apologist for Aleister Crowley (he published various works by Crowley including his "Confessions" and was the author of "The Legend of Aleister Crowley.") Although there is nothing overtly Crowleyan in this tract, Crowley does rate a brief mention, and something of the Beast's bombast and assuredness seems to have slipped in. This book is focusses on limited edition publishing in London in the 1920s, most particularly on the Fanfrolico Press, although Stephensen meanders over diverse topics from art and literature to Australian nationalism. Covers very slightly bowed, cloth a trifle darkened, light rubbing and shelf dust, endpapers a little browned, a very few spots of browning to pages, otherwise a tight, clean VG+ copy. (No dust jacket - believe none called for). Item #47548
