London: Henry Vizetelly, ND [ 1853 ]. Second Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. 200pp. Illustrated papered boards. Charming fold-out b/w frontispiece depicting an elegant seance scene. Title-page vignette & four b/w plates with line drawings. Publisher's advertisements on endpages. A rare popular introduction to "table turning" from the very birth of Spiritualism in Britain. When Spiritualism crossed from the United States to Britain in the winter of 1852–1853 the favoured method of contacting spirits was for a number of persons to seat themselves around a table, and call for a spirit to appear. Typically when it did so, the table would move, or knocks or raps would be heard on it. Hence, in the early years of Spiritualism, phrases like "Table-talking" and "Table-Turning" etc. (as used in the title) did not apply specifically only to methods involving tables, but were used as a catch-all for Spiritualism in general. This copy is of the second edition - which is arguably even rarer than the first, and is probably from the same year. It appears to be identical to the first edition except that it has appended at the rear (and with sequential pagination) a ten-page supplementary chapter on "Professor Faraday's Experiments and Explanation" (the English scientist Michael Faraday [1791-1867] became well known for his careful experimentation and subsequent insights into the relationship between electricity and magnetism etc.). From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his personal seal blind-stamped on the half-title page. Original illustrated boards, professionally rebacked with a rather lurid new spine; fresh endpapers. Boards worn and darkened, rear board discoloured with a two inch abrasion near mid-spine, corners chafed, page edges darkened and thumbed, damp mark to upper edge of first and last leaves, pages toned, text unmarked - Overall a solid Good+ copy of a rare work.
