The Zoist: A Journal of Cerebral Physiology & Mesmerism and Their Application to Human Welfare - Vol.IV, March 1846 to January 1847.

London: Hippolyte Bailliere, 1846-1847. First Edition. Hardcover. Large thick octavo. vi + 602pp. Contemporary half-leather binding. Brown calf over marbled paper boards. Gilt-lettered black title labels to spine. Indexes. B/w plate. The fourth volume (March 1846 to January 1847) of this significant journal which was published quarterly from March 1843 until January 1856. Early volumes of the journal - like this - were devoted almost exclusively to Mesmerism and Phrenology whereas the later volumes also dealt with Spiritualism and the occult, with pieces on clairvoyance, table-turning, spirit rapping, etc. etc. In addition to original essays it featured reviews and letters, with its contributors a virtual "who's who" of prominent figures in the fields of interest that it covered, often engaging in lively correspondence about the relevant issues of the time. Contemporary steel-engraved bookplate of the Quinn family - with motto "Quae Sursum Volo Videre" - on front pastedown. Leather quite rubbed and with some scrapes, but joints still strong. The page edges, endpapers, and first and last few leaves have some pale foxing, otherwise a solid, internally-clean VG+ volume. Item #47592
