William Hone collects and annotates a selection of the sometimes rather unorthodox mystery plays - treating subjects like the early life of Mary and God's reflections on Jesus - that were performed at various churches throughout Britain. Hone (1780-1842) was a Theologian, satirist, free-thinker, and social reformer, whose acquittal against charges levied against him by the British government marked a turning point in the battle against censorship and for press freedom.
