London: F. Pitman & Job Caudwell, 1867. First Edition. Hardcover. Two Spiritualist booklets bound into one volume. Small slim octavo (7" x 4.25"). 48pp. + 32pp. Superb modern half leather craft binding by renowned London book-binder, Bernard C. Middleton. Half brown calf over marbled paper boards; with decorative rules to edges of leather. Spine has raised bands, with gilt title & rules. Two unusual works. The first is by an anonymous woman, commonly identified as "J. O. Chevalier" who having lost a beloved daughter at early age, stumbled into Spiritualism and the circle of Daniel Dunglas Home. At first Chevalier believed the communications she received to be genuine, but soon became convinced that they were fraudulent, but not that they were the work of bogus mediums, but rather of malicious or demonic spirits who sought to deceive. The second work, is another anonymous personal account (this time attributed to J. Page Hopps) of dealings with spirit world, most of which took place in the author's own home over a period of six months. Unlike Chevalier, Hopgood does not appear to find anything sinister in the interactions, and is fascinated by what he may learn about this other aspect of existance. Only one copy of each listed on Worldcat. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. Page edges lightly browned, else a clean VG+ copy. Item #48355
