Superb modern half leather craft binding by renowned London book-binder, Bernard C. Middleton. Half brown calf over marbled paper boards. Spine has raised bands, with gilt title-label and gilt rules. The author John Bigland [sometimes John Bickland] (1750–1832) was an English schoolmaster who became a successful author, writing mostly on history, geography and natural history. His essays, published in 1805, comprised 34 essays on various subjects moral, philosophical and practical, including some half-dozen which dealt with matter supernatural: 'On Popular Superstitions', 'On Omens', 'On the Arts of Sorcery' and three essays 'On Ghosts and Apparitions.' From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. Page-edges browned, minor creases to last few pages, else a clean VG+ copy. Item #48360
