Item #49104 The Sorceries and Scandals of Satan. Anti-Christian, Henry M. TICHENOR.

The Sorceries and Scandals of Satan.

St. Louis, MO: Phil. Wagner, 1917. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 178pp. Deep green cloth lettered in gilt on spine & front board. B/w tipped-in frontispiece reproducing an illustration "Satan Holding Court in Hell" by Gustave Dore. Not, as the title might suggest, an occult work: rather a sustained critique of Christianity. The author, Henry M. Tichenor (1858-1922) was an editor and writer active in the socialist and freethinking movements and an outspoken critic of organized religion in general and Christianity in particular, while being much enamored of the Gods and Goddesses of the pagan world. His writing, including this volume, condemned organized religion, Christianity in particular, as a tool used by small elites to maintain control over the masses and might not be irrelevant to events in the world today. Spine ends lightly bruised and rubbed, page-edges lightly browned, owner's address label on free front endpaper, ink offset slightly affecting title on title-page, otherwise a solid, clean VG+ copy (no dust jacket).
