London: W. Bent, 1791. First Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. [x] + 220pp. Original full calf-leather binding. The author's name is not given; the title-page states "By the author of The Polite Reasoner, and Juvenile Speaker," and the British Library entry for this book credits it to the authors of those volumes, one Mary Weightman. An unusual work designed to persuade young readers that it is quite irrational to believe in or be fearful of ghosts and the supernatural. The book comprises an "Advertisement", Introduction, and a series of nine imagined dialogues. In these dialogues Caroline, a young woman who is presumably the author's alter ego, seeks to persuade her credulous friends, Matilda and Henrietta, of the errors of their ways, and to help them break the "slavish fetters" in which their fear of ghosts has caused them to be shackled. Interestingly there are distinct similarities between her arguments and those of some modern psychologists, with her suggesting that the things they fear are nothing more than the products of their own imagination. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on front free endpaper. Wear to boards, small pieces lost from spine ends, page-edges browned, endpapers discolored. Contemporary previous owner's name (Emma Westmoreland) on front free endpaper, endpapers unevenly discolored, tide-mark to pages 11/12, top-margin pencil scrawls to two pages, otherwise a solid, complete near-VG copy.
