NP: NP, ND [ 1780 ? ]. First Edition. Hardcover. Slim octavo. 8pp. Pamphlet. Bound in modern half blue cloth with marbled boards with printed title-label on front board. Three woodcut illustrations. An extremely rare anonymous late eighteen-century pamphlet (the National Library of Scotland and several other sources date it at circa 1780). The pamphlet describes an encounter between a Mr. Jones, a minister, of Rugby in Warwickshire, and an angel who took the form of an old man. Aside from chastening Jones for thoughts he had harboured about quitting preaching, the angel issued a number of prophecies, "the Heathens shall come out of far countries, and the Grand Turk shall destroy Christendom...." "the French King shall endeavour to make himself great and grand, for then great preparations for war shall be made throughout Europe, ..." "there will be a very remarkable comet seen in several parts of Great Britain, but particularly in the northern parts of Scotland" etc. etc. Three woodcuts, with one a quite charming depiction of an angel. Another edition of the pamphlet exists, "Printed and sold in Aldermary church-yard Bow-Lane, London" but order of precedence is not known. Rare. A bright clean VG+ copy in a VG+ if rather garish, modern binding. Item #49540
