Presentation inscription by the author on front free endpaper. The author, Rev. Archibald Henry Sayce (1846 - 1933), was a pioneering British Assyriologist who held the chair of Professor of Assyriology at Oxford from 1891 to 1919. Amongst his many accomplishments he was one of the first to identify and translate the cuneiform texts astrological and astronomical texts, which he did in a book-length essay: "The Astronomy and Astrology of the Babylonians" which he published in the "Transactions of the Society of Biblical Archaeology " Vol. III, Part 1, 1874. Tears at spine ends, bumps to corners of boards, page-edges browned, extremities a little scuffed & bumped, endpapers foxed, endpaper hinges cracked but holding, else a solid, internally-clean Good+ copy (no dust jacket).
