Color & b/w plates.Title page indicates "Vol. I" but that is all published. Inscribed to "Dr. Bernard" (Theos Bernard?), and signed by the author on front free endpaper: "Presented to Dr. Bernard with the affectionate compliments of the author for his wholehearted devotion to the cause of Indian spiritualism" and dated 1/1/34. Dr. Balkrisbna 1882- was a highly distinguished Indian scholar who wrote extensively on Indian religion and culture. This volume is essentially a biography of Shivaji Bhonsle, a 17th century Indian warrior king who carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that had formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire and later established a competent and progressive civil rule with a well disciplined military and structured administrative organizations. He was most known for his innovative "guerilla" military tactics. Cloth a bit rubbed overall with some fading to outer edges of boards and darkening to spine, spine ends slightly chafed, page edges browned, uneven browning to pages. Still, a tight, unmarked VG copy of a scarce edition. Item #51241
