Item #53297 Matter Mind and Meaning. Whately CARINGTON, H. H. Price.

Matter Mind and Meaning.

London: Methuen, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. xx + 258pp. Red cloth lettered in gilt on spine. Index. Includes a lengthy preface by Harry H. Price. Whately Carington [W. Whateley Smith] (1892-1947) was a British parapsychologist, psychical investigator, and author who for many years was a Member of the Council of the Society for Pyschical Research and was founder and editor of "The Psychic Research Quarterly." In this volume- on which he was working just before his death, "Mr. Carington considers how the researches in psychical phenomena can be incorporated into a philosophy based on the well-explored and well-established sciences. In clear and common-sense terms he shows how the things reported by our senses need not be sharply split off from what the psychicist knows of matter, and how the strange events of the nonmaterial world that have been reported over and over again by experiment and personal experience can be brought into a reasonable framework." From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his blind-stamped ex-libris seal on the front free endpaper. Spine ends and corners a little chafed, spine lettering dulled, else a solid, clean better than VG copy in near-VG dust jacket (dust jacket rubbed & discoloured overall, chipped at edges, price-clipped).
