London: W. H. Harrison, 1880. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xlviii + 266pp. + 14pp. ads. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine & front board, black rules to upper board, page edges red, beveled edges to boards. B/w frontis & illustrations. Appendixes. The first edition of this important work by Johann Zöllner (1834-1882), a professor of physics and astronomy. In company with a number of academic colleagues, Zöllner undertook an investigation into the phenomena associated with Henry Slade. The results, which he published in 'Transcendental Physics,' were overwhelmingly positive, however his enthusiasm for the subject, and advancement of a theory of the fourth dimension to explain the phenomena, only earned him the ridicule of his peers, some of whom went so far as to suggest that he must have been of unsound mind when the experiments were undertaken. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the half title page. Cloth a bit darkened at spine and lightly rubbed overall, spine ends and corners lightly bruised and chafed, faint bump to upper spine, all extremities lightly rubbed, first and last leaves lightly foxed, pages a bit toned, internally bright and unmarked. Overall a lovely, clean VG+ copy. Very scarce in First edition. Item #54007
