My Life: A Record of Events and Opinions ( 2 volumes ).

London: Chapman & Hall, 1905. First Edition. Hardcovers. Large thick octavos. Two volume set. xii + 436pp.; viii + 460pp. These copies appear to have been rebound in (contemporary) plain cloth boards, to which rather crude handwritten paper title-labels have been affixed, whilst the volume numbers and publisher's details have been added to the spines in black pen, speckled page edges. B/w frontispieces & plates. Index. The autobiography of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 – 1913) the British anthropologist, explorer, geographer, naturalist, and general man of science who pioneered the theory of evolution through natural selection, moving Darwin to refine and publish his own thoughts on the subject. Curiously he was also a convert to both Spiritualism and the anti-vaccination movement, both of which are explored in chapters in the work. Cloth is a bit rubbed and generally discoloured, spine and portions of boards closest to spines discoloured and stained - (note: it appears that whomever added the spine labels also attempted to varnish the spines, perhaps thinking - incorrectly - that it would enhance the appearance of the crude spine labels etc), owner's details on front free endpapers, still a solid, internally clean Good pair.
