Koot Hoomi Unveiled; or, Tibetan "Buddhists" versus The Buddhists of Tibet.

London: The Psychological Press Association / E. W. Allen, ND (1884). First Edition. Booklet. 24pp. Original printed thick card wrappers; this copy has been neatly reinforced with the addition of a fresh blue cloth backstrip. AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, with "From the author" handwritten at the top of the title-page. Originally FROM THE LIBRARY of W. Wynn Westcott, one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later Supreme Magus of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.), with his ownership stamp - in the form of a facsimile signature - on the front cover and title-page. On Westcott's death the booklet passed to the library of the S.R.I.A. from which it was eventually discarded. A scarce, very interesting - and rather damning booklet - in which the author argues cogently that the "Tibetan Buddhism" described in the works of Blavatsky and Sinnett bears little or no relation to real Tibetan Buddhism, and that instead it is an amalgamation of the teachings etc. of "southern Buddhism" (Theravda) and the magic etc. described by Eliphas Levi. The booklet was most recently in the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, and has his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. Light foxing to covers & title-page, spine reinforced as noted, otherwise a solid VG copy of a rare booklet, with a remarkable provenance. Item #54114
