The rare first edition of this work by Jacques-Barthélemy Salgues (1760 - 1830). It is effectively a collection of chapters, each of which surveys various occult, folk-beliefs, superstitions etc. Chapters include: "Astres, Astrologues, Astrologie Judiciaire," "Comètes. Présagent-elles des malheurs?" "Main Droite et Main Gauche. Le Main droite est-elle preferable a la Main gauche?" "Lune. La Lune mage-t-elle les pierres?" "Baguette divinatoire," "Aiguillette. Les dame ont-elles quelque chose a craindre des nouers d'aiguillette?", "Hiondelles" "Du Phenix" "Mer Morte - Pommes de Sodome - Femme de Loth" "Ecrouelles" "Magiciens, Sorciers, Enchanteurs, etc." "Spectres, Fantômes, Revenans, etc." "Sabbat, Possédés, Loups-Garous, Incubes et Succubes, Lutins, Farfadet etc." "Salamanders" etc. The work was later reprinted, with two additional volumes added and proved highly influential, being cited in books such as de Plancy's "Dictionnaire des sciences occultes" etc. This copy has been professionally rebacked, with the original backstrip neatly laid down. Errata. General wear to boards, original spine cloth cracked & worn with a little loss to gilt, page-edges foxed & browned, occasional minor foxing to pages, small edges tears or chips to some pages where carelessly opened, small black ink spot on page 440 (obscuring one word in text), top corners clipped from last few leaves (affects extremes of margins only - not near text), otherwise a tight, complete VG copy.
