Origin, Rise and Progress of Mormonism: Biography of its Founders and History of its Church.

New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1867. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 302pp. + 10pp. ads. Rebound in orange cloth library binding gilt-lettered on spine. Engraved frontispiece of Joseph Smith taking the "Golden Bible" from Mormon Hill, portraits of Martin Harris, Sidney Rigdon (sermonizing) and Brigham Young. Pomeroy Tucker (1802 – 1870) was a printer, journalist and politician from Palmyra, New York. He was apparently well acquainted with Joseph Smith, his family, and many of his followers, but was highly suspicious of Smith's claims. He consequently wrote his "Origin, Rise and Progress of Mormonism" a work sometimes hailed as the most influential anti-Mormon work of its time. This copy formerly in the library of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Massachusetts, with their bookplate on front pastedown and discreet library stamp (five numerals only) in the bottom margin of page 3. The rather garish binding has the shelf number gilt stamped at the foot of the spine, no other library marks inside or out. Binder's stamp on last blank, and previous owner's name in pencil on first blank page. Otherwise a tight, fresh VG copy. Item #54522
