Octavo. 170pp. Hand bound in brown faux leather with gilt title and author to spine, b&w illustrations and printed colour plates. Edition limited to 250 numbered copies. Signed by Adam McLean. Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks series No. 5. A collection of alchemical emblems from the "Hortulus Hermeticus" of Daniel Stolz von Stolzenberg ("Daniel Stolcius" 1600-1660). Stolcius was a physician and a pupil of Michael Maier who wrote several is best known for his emblem book, "Viridarium Chymicum" (1624). His other significant work, the "Hortulus Hermeticus" (1627) comprised 160 emblematic images, each accompanied by a short verse. McLean describes these as providing an "in-depth experience of the symbolic material of the alchemical tradition." First edition, later issue: the paper on which it is printed is a bright white it has a relatively high number in the sequence of limitation, and the binding is a brown with the title lettered down the spine reading "Hermetic Garden". Some later issues - as this - had the plates printed in colour, after water colour reworkings by McLean. A tight, bright near Fine copy. Item #55196
