Olla. An Anthology of Sixty Years of Song.

London: The OTO, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto. 128 pp. Original brown cloth with gilt lettering down spine and on upper board, which also has a gilt-stamped device - Crowley's 'Mark of the Beast' sigil. Frontis portrait of Crowley by Augustus John. Dust jacket design includes a portrait of Crowley by Frieda Harris, designer of the Thoth tarot deck. Crowley's own selection of his best poetry, and the last of his books to be published in his own lifetime. Contains some truly memorable works. Famously a binders error saw the 'Mark of the Beast' sigil on the front board stamped upside down. This copy from the collection of British artist, writer and musician David Tibet (founder of the music group Current 93) with his neat pencilled ownership signature on the half-title page beneath which he has written "previously in the collection of Jhonn Balance" (co-founder of Coil, and performer with Nurse with Wound, Psychic TV, Current 93). At the bottom of the same page it has a blind-stamped seal "The Dreamer is Still Asleep" which Balance's partner, Peter Christopherson ("Sleazy") had made after Balance's death and used to mark items that had belonged to the latter. Due to war-time economy standards, paper rationing etc., "Olla" did did not have the production values or durability of some of Crowley's earlier works, with cheap, rough cloth used, etc. This copy is better than many seen: the corners and spine ends are lightly bumped and frayed, and there is a hint of uniform tanning to the pages, clean, fresh, tight, VG or better copy in VG - dust jacket, which is now protected by an acetate sleeve (the fragile dust jacket is rubbed and darkened - particularly at the spine and bottom and adjacent areas of the front and rear panels, and bottom section of the front panel. Lacking one large chip from the back panel, and a number of smaller chips and tears, but still about 95% complete.). Item #55496
