Original brown cloth with black titling and wreath to upper board, gilt titling and rules to spine, top edge gilt. A novel written in the form of a series of letters by the French mystic Étienne Pivert de Senancour (1770-1846). Waite was led to the novel through his reading of Matthew Arnold's poems about de Senancour and decided that the "primitive untutored Mysticism" of the author deserved broader recognition, and therefore to translate the work, at the same time adding a "Biographical and Critical Introduction." [Gilbert A38]. Cloth a bit darkened, corners - edges and spine ends bruised and chafed, spine canted with a little light chipping at upper end, page edges & first and last pages darkened and a bit foxed, paper toned with a few scattered spots of browning.
