Item #57204 The Magic Island. W. B. SEABROOK.
The Magic Island.

The Magic Island.

New York, NY: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover, Octavo x + 336 pp, good condition. Black cloth, with silver title, etc. to spine. B&W illustrations by Alexander King. William B. Seabrook (1884 – 1945) had a lifelong fascination with the occult which he explored in a number of books. "The Magic Island" is his detailed, and personal account, of voodoo practices he observed and experienced in Haiti. In later life he developed a friendship of sorts with Aleister Crowley, and co-wrote a series of long biographical articles about him, although their relationship was probably not helped by rumours - confirmed by Crowley's diaries - that he had an affair with Seabrook's wife, Kate. Cloth a little rubbed, with modest creasing at head and tail of spine. Half-title a little creased dusty. Book title neatly hand-written on first blank, and numerals "349" inked on title-page. Otherwise a clean, about VG+ copy. Item #57204
