Authentic Thaumaturgy; A Professional Occultist on Improving the Realism of Magic Systems Used in Fantasy Simulation Games

Albany, California: The CHAOSium, 1978. First Edition. Softcover. Octavo. Illustrated stapled wrappers. The author received 'the world's first Bachelor of Arts degree in Magic and Thaumaturgy' from the University of California, Berkeley on the front cover. Like all Berkeley diplomas of the time, it was "signed" by then Governor Ronald Reagan, an added touch that appealed to Bonewits' sense off humour. Bonewits, who died in 2010 was well known as a life-long pagan activist, says that this book came about because he was "asked to write a book on how players of fantasy games could improve the realism of their magical characters" - and so he did! While a portion of the book is largely of relevance to game players, the vast majority is effectively a practical introduction to magic. Covers a bit darkened and rubbed, edges browned, text clean. Overall a tight, unmarked VG copy. Unusual. Item #57248
