The Magical Record of the Beast 666. The Diaries of Aleister Crowley 1914-1920; [ Review Copy ]

London: Duckworth, 1972. First edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. xvi + 326pp. Red cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine. Index. The First UK trade edition of this significant publication of Crowley's diaries. The significant first publication of Crowley's American and early Cefalua period diaries, which cover virtually the whole of Crowley's American sojourn, from shortly after his arrival in 1914 to his departure in 1919, his subsequent travels, and early days at Cefalu in 1920. In it he recorded not only day to day events, but his magical workings, experiments with sex magick and drugs (hence he termed them his "Magical Record"). A "Review copy" with the original publisher's slip loosely inserted. With the bookplate of the late Helene Hodge on the first blank. Hodge, the ex-wife of Stephen Skinner, was herself an author, and an unassuming but important figure in British neo-pagan witchcraft and the London occult scene from the 1970s onwards. Although not marked as such, more recently from the collection of occult scholar and author, Stephen Skinner. Cloth a bit rubbed and darkened - with a few faint spots, extremities chafed, bruising to spine ends, page edges darkened, bookplate, pages toned. Still a solid and unmarked VG copy in Good only dust jacket (Dust jacket chafed chipped and creased at all edges and extremities, not clipped - now protected by mylar sleeve). Item #57371
