London: George Redway, 1897. First UK Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. x + 520pp. Original gold cloth with red titling to upper board and spine, index. The second edition of this work includes a new "Supplement to Second edition" at rear. An unusual account of "certain strange psychical phenomena" (demonic possession, etc.) observed by the author, a Christian missionary in the interior districts of the Shantung Province of China in the late nineteenth century. The author then goes on to examine reports of similar occurences elsewhere "Demon Possession in India, Japa and Other Lands," "Demon Possession Christian Countries," before looking at possible explanations and offering a "Sketch of Historical Demonism" and chapters on "Spiritualism" and "The Facts and Literature of the Occult." The book was first published in Chicago in 1894, with a second corrected edition, including a new 35pp. "Supplement to Second edition" comprising reviews, comments etc. at the rear issued in 1896. This is the first UK edition, which uses the text of the US second edition. Although not marked as such, this copy is from the collection of occult scholar and author, Stephen Skinner. Cloth is very grubby, discoloured & damp-marked, spine quite darkened, corners and spine ends bumped and chafed, page edges darkened with some chipping and short closed tears. Soiling, chipping & damp-mark to fore-edge of last few leaves, endpapers unevenly browned, internal unmarked and remarkably fresh. Despite cosmetic problems - a solid, unmarked Good copy.
