The Equinox Vol. I No VIII (Volume One, Number Eight).

London: Wieland & Co., September 1912. First Edition - 'Standard Issue'. Hardcover. Thick quarto. pp. (lv) + 252 + (xvi) + 202 (actually numbered 1 - 101) Printed paper boards, with cloth spine with paper title label. This copy has the classic 'Equinox' logo and text on the front board (there was a variant issue which instead had the title and a series horizontal lines printed in black). Illustrations. Address change slip facing p. xvi. Crowley was the editor and principal author of most of the volumes of The Equinox, which contained a variety of poetry, fiction, and reviews - generally with esoteric themes - alongside a number of articles of occult instruction. The contents of this volume include: The Temple Of Solomon The King (Continued), His Secret Sin, Long Odds, Doctor Bob (a Sketch By Mary D'este And Aleister Crowley) The Woodcutter, La Foire, Professor Zircon, A Brief Abstract Of The Symbolic Representation Of The Universe, Derived By Doctor John Dee Through The Skrying Of Sir Edward Kelly (Part II), The Forty-Eight Calls, The Tell-Tale Heart (Adapted From The Story Of E. A. Poe, By Aleister Crowley) A Description Of The Cards Of The Tarot, With Their Attributions; Including A Method Of Divination By Their Use, Waite's Wet Or The Backslider's Return, My Crapulous Contemporaries, No. VI., An Obituary & Three Poems, By Victor B. Neuburg. Special Supplement: Sepher Sephiroth. The thin fabric used for the spines of the First Trade Editions of "The Equinox" was notoriously fragile, and is often damaged or missing altogether. In this case the volume has been given a new cloth spine which almost exactly matches the original, onto which has been mounted a facsimile of the original paper title label which has been "distressed" to match the boards. The boards are a little darkened at edges, lightly chipped and rounded at corners and edges with some marks but are generally complete and sound. Neat paper reinforcement at inside hinges. The pages are uniformly toned, but not brittle, neat owner's name on half-title, a few pencil underlines, scattered foxing and other signs of age (including a faintly musty smell) - but internally it is over all VG condition, and has the advantage that unlike many with the original backstrip it can be safely opened and read without fear of damaging the spine. No dustjacket (none issued). Item #58069
