Item #58547 The Occult Review. Volume XXII - No. 5. November 1915. Ralph SHIRLEY, Material on Arthur Machen, William Wynn Westcott Elliott O'Donnell.

The Occult Review. Volume XXII - No. 5. November 1915.

London: William Rider & Son, 1915. First US Edition. Softcover. Quarto. Variously paginated. Approx. 80 pp. Original blue printed paper wrappers. The contents of the first US edition are identical to those of the UK edition of the preceding month (in this case October 1915). The editorial of this issue contains much about Arthur Machen and "the Angel of Mons" - the original owner was evidently fascinated by the subject and has stapled in two contemporary newspaper articles on the subject, one of which is quite large. The editorial also addresses Bobola's Prophecy' and discusses "The Devil's Mistress" (a novel by John William Brodie-Innes [1848 - 1923], a leading member of the Amen-Ra Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn). Essays in this issue comprise "Ghosts with a Mission" by Elliott O'Donnell; "A Russian Idea of the Anti-Christ" by Edith K Harper; "The White Lady of the Hohenzollerns" by Katharine Cox; "Dreams, Prophetic & Symbolical" by Reginald B Span; "Hindu Marriage & its Ideals" by Harendra N Maitra; and "Angels" by William Wynn Westcott. Also, letters, book reviews etc. Spine a little darkened and quite quipped, overlapping edges of wrappers rubbed & chipped, pencil note on front wrapper. The newspapers clippings have offset heavily browning the adjacent pages, and there is some heavy pencil marginalia around the Mons references. A few leaves have corners folded over as place markers. A basically sound, VG copy of this fragile publication, with interesting inserts. Was $40.00. Item #58547
