While Michael Maier's "Atalanta fugiens" (1617) is best known to students of alchemy and hermetica on account of its fifty magnificent emblems, it also has a strong, interwoven musical element, with each of the emblems accompanied by a fugue, or short piece of music, as well as epigrams, discourse, etc. This edition has a special emphasis on the musical element; Joscelyn Godwin has transcribed Maier's music in modern notation as number, as well as retranslating the accompanying texts, and Jungian analyst and musicologist Hildemarie Streich has provided an Introductory Essay. Covers lightly rubbed, dark coloured endpages are only very slightly affected by glue offset (as was typical of the earlier issues of McLean's publications. OVerall a tight, clean VG+ copy.
