Saint Michael the Archangel: Three Encomiums by Theodosius, Archbishop of Alexandria, Severus, Patriarch of Antioch, and Eustathius, Bishop of Trake. The Coptic Texts with Extracts from Arabic and Ethiopic Versions, Edited with a Translation by E. A. Wallis Budge.

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Small thick folio (11 3/4 x 8 inches), xxxviii, 108 + 242pp. Superb contemporary half leather binding. Beautiful red morocco over fine cloth boards, raised bands and gilt titles and decorative rules to spine. An important collection of texts on the Archangel Michael from early Egyptian Christian sources. In addition to the translations by Budge the volume includes the original Coptic texts, excerpts of the Arabic translation of the encomiums, and the Ethiopic text of encomium of Severus. No limitation statement is given, but these early privately-funded specialist studies by Budge typically had printings of between 50 and 200 copies. Thus very scarce. The binding is in superb condition, quite flawless and thus near-Fine, internally the pages show some browning, mostly around the edges, and a few dusty marks. Still a lovely copy of a rare work.
