Versions of the text circulated in France from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, and according to the book's own narrative, it was written by a French officer who was taught the secrets of ancient magic by an Arab during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. It contains a number of seemingly fabulous designs for talismans and rings, as well as spells and words of power. Not a work of high magic, but one that has been enthusiastically adopted into various American folk magic traditions. A little light rubbing to covers, otherwise a bright, clean near Fine copy.
