London: Printed for J. Watts : And sold by D. Brown, W. Meres, and F. Clay, 1718. Third Edition, Corrected. Hardcover. Small octavo. (viii) 112pp. Modern full brown leather. Engraved frontispiece (of Abelard and Heloise holding hands in a library). An early English translation (the first English translation appeared only five years earlier, in 1713) of one of the most famous love stories in history, the tragic tale of the 12th century philosopher and theologian Peter Abelard and his student Heloise. Binding a little splayed, but otherwise fine. Fresh endpapers. Frontispiece chipped and laid down, now facing away from title-page. Most page corners gently rounded, some chipping to edges, with professional tissue repairs to the fore-edges and gutters of a number of pages. Usual darkening to pages, but otherwise VG antiquarian condition - although the new endpapers are somewhat garish. Uncommon. Item #59363
